Visions of restoration and repair beg the question: restore to what or when? For whom or what beings? Some efforts could beautify the river with flowing water, diverse plants and animals, shaping the once neglected river’s edge into a site primed for future real estate speculation and fetishization. Even the most ecologically minded proposals and visions are often beholden to structures that are ultimately antithetical to many notions of ecological health, reiterating harmful human impact.
Development and progress narratives are often linear and accelerating. Like the endgame of many algorithms, the highest values are predictability for mastery and control. In response to these values of linear progress and predictability I explored ephemerality and cyclical processes with the river material and the installation audio.
